Redemption, Port Mansfield, Texas On Saturday 01/18/2025, I took out Elias Escalon and his son Aaron. We went up north towards the King Ranch pier anticipating a northern that was to blow in at noon. On our first wade we caught a few fish that were all released. We moved to San Antonio shack and attempted to get some redemption from last week. Aaron had the hot hand and caught several reds. We fished from around 8:00 am to 12 noon. Although the northern was predicted at noon, the weather stayed calm for the most part. On this day the minor was from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Getting SKUNKED, Port Mansfield, Texas On Saturday 1/11/2025, I had the opportunity to join my buddy Raul Flores on his new boat, a South Bay 200 from Cougar Marine. On this particular day, we were coming off a few days of strong northern winds with a major cold front hitting days before. Water temperature was sitting at around 48 degrees with overcast skies throughout the morning. At noon the sun broke out with beautiful clear skies. We ran into the land cut looking for reds maybe warming up on the banks of the “Oil Field Cut” inside the Land Cut. I am posting this video to ensure my viewers that not every trip will be filled with fish and meat on the table. Even though the catching was bad, the views that mother nature provided will probably be more memorable than the fish I have ever caught. Enjoying the great outdoors is what it’s really about. Getting SKUNKED, Port Mansfield, Texas
On Saturday 12/21/24, I had the opportunity to fish with my father-in-law Jim Kirkpatrick. Jim, AKA “Chief”, has been fishing Baffin Bay for the majority of his life. Jim attended Texas A&I University and started fishing in Baffin Bay in the 60’s. Jim’s first boat was a “John Boat” that he used for many years. In 1983 Jim bought a new Shallow Sport flush deck and to this day still owns that same boat. I remember the first time I fished with Jim and asking him why he did not have any electronics on his boat. Jim replied, I know where I am going in the pitch dark of the night. Jim has always been a fisherman that I have looked up to and that always has great fishing stories. I remember attending his 80th surprise birthday party and listening to amazing fishing stories told by his fishing buddies that attended the party. I wish I could have recorded those stories and captured the moment. Many of my friends have always asked me how my wife puts up with all my fishing and I always respond by stating that she was raised right (Thank You, Jim). Jim has three children and several grandkids and great grandkids. Not only is Jim a great fisherman, but has been involved with Texas A&I Javelinas football team keeping stats for over 40 years. In addition, for 35 years Jim has been an active board member of the Corpus Christi Ballet and played the honorary roll of “Mother Ginger” this year. Port Mansfield Drive By Ok guys coming to the end of the year and I was feeling kinda lazy not wanting to fish. I had toyed with the idea of making random videos of boats passing by and decided to give it a try. On Saturday 12/28/24, I grabbed a cup of coffee (Black Rifle Coffee) and sat on my front porch and started filming boats going by. I filmed from around 7ish to 10ish. Boat traffic was moderate for the time of year, happy to see that everyone was taking advantage of the great weather we had this Christmas week. Port Mansfield Drive-By ONE
Port Mansfield bay fishing in Gladys’ Hole, Port Mansfield, Texas On Friday 12/20/2024, I had the opportunity to fish with Ranger Elias Escalon and one of his sons, Aaron Escalon. We headed out at about 7:00 am since the minor bite was not until 10:30 am. We headed north and fished an area I call the Game Warden shack. After boxing a few trout in that area, we moved into Gladys’ Hole where we caught several more trout. Aaron caught a personal best trout that measured around 26.5 inches. In addition to catching trout, we caught several reds to include 3 that made the box. We finished off the day at an area called Rincon De San Jose, where Elias and Aaron caught the last three keepers. I was extremely excited to have had the opportunity to video tape Aaron’s PB trout. On a side note, I tried my new DJI OSMO Action 4 camera which did a great job with the videos but also captured lots of wind noise. I ordered a set of DJI Mini Mics that will help cut down the wind noise for future videos. I would also like to thank the Escalon family for the amazing Ranger badge “Cinco Peso” framed picture that is going to look amazing in my tackle room. Port Mansfield bay fishing in Gladys’ Hole, Port Mansfield, Texas
Power Pole Pro II shallow anchor removal and replacement, Port Mansfield, Texas On Monday 12/16/2024, I removed and replaced my old worn out Power Pole Pro Series II with a new Power Pole Pro Series II. The old pump was broken and the PP was in the up position. I removed the black (down) and blue (up) hoses to release the pressure on the PP. I unscrewed the hoses from the pump and PP-anchor. I then removed the pump (SeaMonster) from the center console which made a mess with hydraulic fluid. I then removed the 4 bolts that secured the PP anchor to the transom. After removing the PP anchor I cleaned the old 5200 off. I got some assistance from a neighbor to hold the PP anchor in place while I put the 4 new screws and bolts. I then installed the new pump (SeaMonster II) in the center console. With the old hydraulic hoses still in the rigging tube, I attached the new blue hose to the old hose and pulled it through the rigging tube to the center console. I then repeated the same processes with the black hose. FYI, I had to use the 3 foot hose extension kit to reach my pump. This kit did not come included with the PP Pro Series II. After installing the hoses to the pump, I attached the ground wire (black) to the negative side of my battery. I attached the positive wire (red) to my Perko battery switch. The wireless remote and the console remote appeared to be already paired and started working immediately. After a few up and down cycles of the PP and adding additional hydraulic fluid, everything started working great and felt back to normal. Overall, it was an easy removal and replacement. I was being careful on the removal as I was giving away the old PP and was trying not to damage it. I could have cut the the hydraulic hoses too which would have sped up the processes. Overall the hardest thing was cleaning up the hydraulic fluid mess it/I created. NOTE: everything lined up correctly with the old holes for mounting the pump and the anchor. You will need to drill bigger holes for the new hydraulic hoses. Also don’t forget to have some 5200 handy and maybe some clear silicone. Thanks for watching. Offshore Fishing Gulf of Mexico Port Mansfield, Texas (State water snappers and kings) On Friday 11/22/2024, I had the opportunity to fish with Captain Mark Gavin from Port Mansfield, TX. Cpt. Mike and I ran out to the CCA Reef located 7 miles South East of Port Mansfield. Sea conditions and weather were perfect that day which allowed me to run my Dargel Kat HDX25. Mike wanted to try out some slow pitch gear so we started out SPJ for whatever bit. I was quickly cut off and from experience, I knew king fish were in the area. Mike was a quick learner and caught 1 red snapper and 2 strawberry groupers on the jig. The bite slowed down so we transitioned into dropping cut bait (mullet). Mike caught most of the snappers as I filmed. After lunch the wind picked up and the snappers got even more aggressive and started eating at the surface. After catching and releasing several more snappers we trolled around the CCA Reef for a while. The king fish bite was hot too and we caught several kings on the troll. Port Mansfield Community Bar, 11-16-24 On Saturday, 11/16/2024, I did a quick three hour fishing trip at the Community Bar located about one mile north of Port Mansfield, Texas. The Community bar is a spoil bank that runs east and west and can be wade fished the majority of the year. I used a KWiggler ball tail shad in the Jalapeño Popper color. I caught around fifteen trout in total, all trout were released to be caught again. I fished the “major” coming off a full moon that was between 12 noon and 2:00 PM.
